What a wonder it is! So grand, so solemn, so vast! And yet so delicate, so airy, so graceful!Mark Twain about Milan Cathedral
General information
Along with Piedmont, Emilia Romagna and Veneto, Lombardy is one of the most important regions for Italian economy. Being an industrial and financial centre with many services companies, Lombardy is considered to be one of the four motors of Europe. Milan, its main city, is one of the six European financial capital cities, together with London, Paris, Hamburg, Frankfurt and Munich. The area consists almost equally in plains and mountains. Its highest peak is Cima Perrucchetti (4.020 mt). Morphologically the region is divided into 4 areas: the Alps, the mountains and the hills, the Po Valley (or Padanian plain) and the area south of the River Po. Many rivers run in Lombardy, among them the Po, the longest Italian river, and some of the biggest lakes of the country lie here, i.e. Garda Lake, Como Lake, Lago Maggiore and many others. Like the natural conformation of the land, similarly the climate varies depending where you are in the region. The presence of many rivers, of many rice fields and other farmland causes very hot and humid summer in the plain, while winter may be quite cold and stinging due to humidity. In the hills and mountains, summer is cooler while winter can be even colder, although snow may fall all over the region. Due to its geographical position, Lombardy is very well connected with other European countries, also thanks to the fact that the biggest and most active Italian airports are to be found here: Malpensa, Linate and Orio al Serio. The high-speed rail system allows to reach the major Italian cities like Turin, Venice, Bologna, Florence, Rome and Naples in a blink of an eye!
