Cover crops in vineyards

Green manure is an agricultural technique also known as cover crops and is applied to enrich the soil with organic substances, especially in vineyards.

When a soil is left “bare” between one crop and the next, the soil loses important nutrients. Due to the lack of vegetation, the soil is easily eroded by wind and rain, which sweep away the soluble nutrients, and even solar energy cannot transform into organic matter.

Green manure instead offers numerous advantages. Nicola Dal Bò, Oenologist at the Il Centenario family farm, in the Prosecco DOC area and creator of Naturalmind wines, explains them to us:

We have tried to give the company an ethical and "green" footprint, basing our philosophy on corporate sustainability. We started by modifying our agronomic techniques in the vineyard: for example, we use the cover-crops technique to keep the microbial activity of the soil alive, going to sow a dozen plants in the soil, including the forage pea, the protein pea , oats, wheat, barley, velvety vetch and a mix of brassicaceae. We thus allow the soil to remain alive even in the autumn-winter period, as these plants produce exudates and stimulate the microbial growth of the soil. In turn, they produce important elements for the production of grapes: in this way the use of chemical fertilizers can be avoided, being able to produce sustainably. [/ Su_quote]

The advantages of cover crops are therefore evident. This technique:

  • increases the humus content of the soil, its structure and porosity;
  • protects the soil and keeps it moist;
  • improves control of weeds;
  • can replace manure and fertilizers;
  • contributes to bringing useful microelements to the surface;
  • promotes biodiversity and the presence of useful insects.
